To help Launch the Australian Centre for Democracy and Justice launch its latest campaign: En Masse, we are screening the exciting new documentary on remix culture: RiP: A remix manifesto.

In RiP: A remix manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers. The film features mash-up musician Girl Talk, Creative Commons founder Lawrence Lessig, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow.

Many voices, many stories, and a shared mission

THEY’RE an unlikely bunch of cub reporters with a common aim. They include former refugees from war-torn Sudan, a former Chinese diplomat, and a West Papuan who came to Australia on a wooden canoe.

What they share is an address, a passion for telling stories and a sense of gratitude that they have been given a voice.

They are all a part of a unique Melbourne project called Yarra Reporter, a journalism training program run by Infoxchange Australia that equips public housing residents with the basic skills needed to report on the issues affecting them.

Tonight we will be meeting people who are working on Yarra Reporter. We will be discussing potential story ideas and group formation. We will also be looking through some of the resources available at J-Lab.

Tonight’s speaker is Jock Given:

Jock Given is the author of Turning off the Television: Broadcasting’s Uncertain Future and America’s Pie: Trade and Culture after 9/11 and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Digital Television. His doctoral thesis about the early wireless entrepreneur Ernest Fisk was accepted by the School of Historical Studies at the University of Melbourne in 2007. In 2003/04, he received the C.H. Currey Fellowship at the State Library of NSW for this project. Jock has degrees in Law, Economics, Commerce and Arts from the University of Queensland and has worked as Director of the Communications Law Centre, Policy Advisor at the Australian Film Commission and Director, Legislation and Industry Economics, Department of Transport and Communications. He now researches, writes and teaches about communications law and policy, especially digital broadcasting, media ownership, international trade and the history of the multinational media enterprises. In February 2007 he became Professor of Media and Communications at the ISR.
